Here's an American Beauties native with classic yet unusual landscape beauty. Unusual because the texture of this plant stands out in sharp contrast to most shrubs its size due to its rough, cinnamon colored branches, its outsized deep green foliage, and its amazing, mammoth summer bloom. When foliated, Oakleaf Hydrangea displays big, palmately toothed, rough, deep green leaves that are a textural masterpiece. In July and August, huge white flowers made up of a pyramidal stack of individual florets up to 12" tall perch above the foliage in an incredible show that is only topped by a fantastic display of deep burgundy to orange fall foliage color. Oakleaf is a stand out in full sun or partial shade, is terrific individually or in groups, has few insect pests, and even puts on a show in the winter with its branches peeling cinnamon colored bark. Even birds love the protection its branches bring and the nesting material from its persistent dried blooms.
