Known for its fine-textured, green foliage, which consists of flat, needle-like branchlets. It features woody, spiny stems and can grow up to 4 feet tall with a spreading habit. While small and inconspicuous, the plant produces tiny white flowers followed by bright red berries. They can thrive as an indoor houseplant in New England with proper care to manage its needs for bright light, consistent moisture, and high humidity. Since it is a frost-tender plant, you must bring it indoors before the first frost, usually in early autumn.
Indoor Care
Bring indoors: Before the first frost or when nighttime temperatures start consistently falling into the 50s
Bright, indirect light, like a window that faces east. Keep it away from drafts or heat sources like radiators.
Winter watering: Reduce your watering frequency in the fall and winter, allowing the soil to dry out a bit more between waterings.
Watch for pests: Keep an eye out for pests like spider mites and aphids, which can sometimes become a problem indoors.
Outdoor Care
Partial shade or filtered sunlight
A shaded porch or underneath a larger tree is an ideal location
Keep the soil consistently moist during the summer growing season, especially in hot weather
