For New England, grow olive trees in pots to protect them from cold winters, providing at least six hours of direct sunlight daily and using well-draining soil amended with horticultural grit. Water deeply but allow the soil to dry out between waterings, reducing water in fall and winter. Fertilize once in spring and mid-to-late summer, and for flowering/fruiting, provide a two-month cold spell indoors in an unheated space like a conservatory.

Potting and Soil
Well-Draining Soil: Use pots with excellent drainage and a soil mix that includes horticultural grit to ensure the soil doesn't become waterlogged.
Terracotta Pots: Opt for terracotta pots over plastic ones, as they are more breathable and help prevent soil from staying too moist.

Watering and Feeding
Drought Tolerance: Once established, olive trees are very drought-tolerant, but they still need water for good growth.
Watering Schedule: Water thoroughly when the soil starts to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in the fall and winter.
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release organic fertilizer in the spring and again in mid-to-late summer.

Location and Light
Full Sun: Place your olive tree in a location where it receives at least six hours of direct sunlight per day.
Winter Protection: For the crucial cold spell needed for flowering and fruiting, move potted trees to an unheated conservatory or greenhouse during the winter months.

 Pruning
Annual Pruning: Prune your olive tree annually to help maintain its shape and encourage new, healthy growth.
Check for Life: When pruning, look for green tissue under the bark to confirm that the branches are still alive.
